Join University of Maine Cooperative Extension Marine Extension associate Jaclyn Robidoux for a presentation on the seaweeds found along Maine’s coast and the many ways they can be used, including in home and community gardens.
Participants will learn to identify common native seaweeds and examine real seaweed specimens. The workshop will explore the ecological, cultural, culinary, and commercial importance of seaweed, along with how seaweeds are harvested and farmed in Maine.
The presentation will also cover the use of seaweed in gardening, including different seaweed products and soil amendments, traditional garden practices, and considerations for collecting and using seaweed yourself. Other uses, including food, art, wellness, and sustainable materials and products, will be discussed.
This workshop is intended for home and community gardeners and individuals interested in commercial seaweed production or making seaweed products.
