CULTURE NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new state report released Friday highlights challenges in school construction as rising costs and deferred maintenance hinder updates at schools in Bath and Frenchville. The report recommends cost reduction + resource maximization strategies to meet shifting enrollment needs and funding gaps.  WMTW
  • Lawmakers are considering LD 2192, a bill drafted by Sen. Margaret Rotundo and Cara Courchesne that would require school job applicants to disclose prior misconduct investigations. A public hearing is set for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee meeting room (Cross Building in Augusta).  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S.S. New Mexico, carrying over 120 sailors, was docked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Saturday for a scheduled overhaul to keep it ready for combat. It last visited the shipyard in December 2019.  FOX23

SPORTS NEWS

  • Portland High won the Class A South boys basketball title on Saturday (48-30 over Cheverus at Cross Insurance Arena) with key plays from Cordell Jones and Lucas LeGage. They will face Camden Hills for the state championship next Saturday at 7:45 p.m.  Portland Press Herald
  • Noble led Maine wrestlers with four qualifiers advancing to the New England Championships on March 7-8 in Providence, while Fort Kent's Joel Desjardins (named Dennis Bishop Outstanding Wrestler) earned top honors. Several competitors also reached key career milestones.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine women’s basketball rallied from an eight-point deficit on Saturday in Orono to beat New Hampshire 67+61, with Adrianna Smith scoring 35 points—including eight in the fourth—for her 15th double-double, while Sarah Talon and Lala Woods contributed key points in the win.  Portland Press Herald
  • UMaine men’s hockey team swept Merrimack with a 5-2 win in Orono on Saturday. Josh Nadeau scored twice and contributed assists while Owen Fowler added two goals and goalie Mathis Rousseau made 21 saves.  Portland Press Herald
  • Addison Jordan, who returned from a knee injury, powered the Cheverus girls basketball team to a 46-35 win over South Portland in the Class A South final on Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena (Portland).  Portland Press Herald
