ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, a memorial procession started at the MaineDOT Fairfield Training Center and ended at the Augusta Civic Center to honor MaineDOT workers James Brown and Dwayne Campbell, who were killed last month when a minivan struck them on a Waterville overpass.  WGME

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Investigations show that Amazon’s warehouses have high injury rates and force workers to ignore safety protocols. Local voices in Gorham worry that a potential expansion could bring dangerous working conditions to the area.  Portland Press Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • New England Blacksmiths held a winter meetup Saturday at Perakis Ironworks where members cycled through four stations to learn forging skills such as creating bookmarks + welded baskets; the event quickly filled with local artisans eager to step out of their own forges.  WMTW

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Maine Mariners finished an eight-game road trip with a 2-1 win over the Worcester Railers on Saturday, tying their record with seven straight wins. They will host Trois-Rivières today (as they aim to extend the streak).  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine’s hockey team won its fourth straight game Saturday with a 3-2 victory over Northeastern in Lowell, Massachusetts — defenseman Frank Djurasevic scored twice in the second period and goalie Mathis Rousseau made 23 saves. The team must win next Saturday against Vermont or face a preliminary playoff round.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland High's Bulldogs won the Class A boys basketball title on Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena by defeating Camden Hills 76-60 — their run from sixth seed with a 17-6 record boosted coach Joe Russo to his sixth state title in a 36-year career.  Portland Press Herald
  • Cheverus girls basketball won 63-61 in overtime after a 19-point comeback against Hampden Academy Saturday at Cross Insurance Arena. Freshman Kristin King scored the final basket with 36 seconds left — clinching the team’s third state title in five seasons.  Portland Press Herald
  • York co-op hockey team powered to a 4-0 win over Kennebunk/Wells on Saturday at Troubh Ice Arena by a perfect penalty kill & strong offense, advancing to its first Class B South final since 2023. They will face either Gorham/Massabesic or Poland/Leavitt/Oak Hill/Gray-New Gloucester on Tuesday at Cross Insurance Arena.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Gorham/Massabesic boys hockey team won 3 to 2 on Saturday at Troubh Ice Arena and advanced to the Class B South final; they will face York/Biddeford/Old Orchard Beach Tuesday at Cross Insurance Arena.  Portland Press Herald
