Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 14th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mainers can enjoy a Shamrock Shake at local McDonald’s until March 17 to boost funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities. The minty treat has raised nearly $92,000 in recent years (helping families with lodging, meals and transportation).  WGME

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A week after employees at Holy Donut said they wanted to unionize over concerns including low wages and unsafe conditions, the company said the claims are false. The bakery posted on social media Thursday night and said it may petition the National Labor Relations Board for a vote but doubts that unionization will benefit its team.  WGME
  • MTF Subs, which runs 15 Subway shops from Portland to Calais, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court in Pennsylvania earlier this year. Its reorganization plan depends on keeping its 43 franchises open while addressing lease & loan problems at its Maine locations.  FOX23
  • Holy Donut (Park Ave) said Thursday that last week’s unionizing effort was based on false claims, adding it was willing to petition the National Labor Relations Board even as it warned a union might fundamentally change workplace dynamics.  FOX23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Portland will hold its annual St. Patrick's Day parade tomorrow on Commercial Street starting at noon from the Fish Pier parking lot to Bell Buoy Park, featuring local bands, community groups like the Maine Irish Heritage Center and local mascots to celebrate the city's history and heritage.  WGME

  • Portland trees are leafing out about (4 days) earlier than in previous years as warmer spring temperatures shift the first leaves from early May to late April.  FOX23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting in 2027, Portland will raise cruise ship tariff fees from $18 to $24 per passenger by 2030 — boosting the annual fee from $3 to $7. The city will offer a $2 discount for low-sulfur fuel to encourage cleaner fuel use at berth.  WGME

HEALTH NEWS

  • Older Mainers face rising fatal overdoses — symptoms of substance use disorder are often mistaken for aging and stigma stops many from seeking help, Sweetser’s OPTIONS Liaison said. More patients are now using medication-assisted treatment and joining a flexible outpatient program at Brunswick Hope and Healing Center that offers nine hours weekly therapy.  WMTW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Hearts of Pine is changing its ticket process due to high demand. A 48-hour registration period (for $45 standing-room tickets) will begin Monday at 3 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Stadium, and fans will receive random email links before March 27.  Portland Press Herald
