ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • At around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, Maine State Police said a crash on the Maine Turnpike near mile marker 55 in Falmouth left one driver seriously injured and led to the arrest of the other driver—who fled on foot—after police dogs tracked him about one mile south due to signs of intoxication.  Portland Press Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local musician Jeff Beam organized a tribute show to honor filmmaker David Lynch by gathering Maine musicians to perform works from his films and TV series Twin Peaks. The event is set for 8 p.m. Thursday at Blue on 650 Congress St. — tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland marked St. Patrick's Day on March 17th as the annual parade on Commercial Street brought families, pets, and local groups together for lively music and dance while a pint of Guinness sparked the celebration—organizers from the Irish American Club led the event and the festivities will continue with special food, drinks, and a Monday morning plunge to support the Portland firefighters' Children’s Burns Foundation.  FOX23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers in Cumberland are meeting on rainy spring evenings to help frogs, salamanders, and other amphibians cross a road safely (coordinated by the Chebeague & Cumberland Land Trust) while a town police officer slows traffic. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maine has spent over $17 million to digitize its court records — most records are still not online as officials work to protect sensitive data and manage staffing limits. The state will pilot an online criminal case system in Androscoggin County this summer and lawmakers are asked to provide $1.8 million annually to maintain the system.  Portland Press Herald
  • Dozens of protestors gathered at Congress Square Park on Sunday to demand that Senator Susan Collins hold a town hall meeting—she has not met with Mainers in over 25 years—as local residents ask for clear answers.  WGME

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rural Maine hospitals plan to cross-train staff and use family medicine doctors for C-sections—moves prompted by falling birth rates and the closing of birthing units.
