COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ On Tuesday afternoon, a downtown Portland rally gathered community members to support Mahmoud Khalil, a permanent resident detained in Louisiana and facing proposed deportation after his arrest last week over pro-Palestine protests at Columbia University. Khalil’s attorneys filed a lawsuit challenging his detention (arguing that his rights were violated) as protestors demanded a review of his case. WGME
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Timothy Riley of Gorham pleaded guilty in June 2024 to a bank robbery at the Gorham Savings Bank on Sokokis Trail in Waterboro—he brandished a gun, fled on a dirt bike, and admitted he was in debt. FOX23
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Office of Chief Medical Examiner reports that the number of unclaimed bodies has risen from an average of two or three per year in 2015 to about 10 per year since 2020 — a new bill proposes to shorten the holding period from 30 days to 15, allowing friends of the deceased to make final arrangements sooner. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The 20th annual Cares for Kids Radiothon will be broadcast Friday through Saturday from Westbrook studios on 107.5 Frank FM and 99.9 The Wolf, sharing firsthand stories from families supported by Maine’s only children’s hospital—funds raised will directly benefit the hospital’s programs, equipment, and services. - ➤ A House bill that may cut about 10% of the federal Medicaid budget is set for Senate review, and Rep. Pingree and local health experts warned that such cuts could endanger vital services—including closing rural hospitals and reducing therapy access for children.
