BUSINESS NEWS

  • A popular downtown Portland donut shop announced it will close after failing to secure a lease at 30 City Center off Monument Square. HiFi Donuts, which opened in June 2017, will have its final day on April 17 + the owners say they plan to find a new location soon.  WMTW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Comic Arts Maine Portland will take place at the Portland Public Library on April 5 for a free one-day festival that brings together nearly 80 artists selected from 198 applications—organizers plan to offer workshops and panels for kids and adults along with an exhibit called Pencils and Inks that shows how comics are made.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shenna Bellows, Maine's Secretary of State, announced her run for governor in 2026 at a morning event in Hancock and planned another stop in Augusta to discuss her record in the state Senate—her work includes efforts on election security, civil rights, and property tax relief. Her campaign launch comes after serving as the state's top election official and highlights her past initiatives in health care and public service.  WMTW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Volunteers for the American Red Cross gave blood and supported disaster recovery on March 26th during Giving Day, with teams responding to more large disasters in the first 50 days than there were calendar days. Volunteers in Maine helped communities affected by wildfires out West and flooding in the Southeast, and the organization said donations of any size make a big difference.  FOX23

SPORTS NEWS

  • The University of Maine men’s hockey team showed a strong offensive spark after 11 players scored in the Hockey East tournament and captain Lynden Breen scored two goals in Thursday’s double-overtime win over Northeastern — the team will clinch its conference title in Friday’s game against UConn and face Penn State at 8:30 p.m. at the PPL Center in Allentown.  Portland Press Herald
  • Senior wrestler Joseph Lathwood (of Thornton Academy) won the 165-pound Class A title on Feb. 15 (in Lewiston) by technical fall and was named 2024-25 Varsity Maine Boys Wrestler of the Year. He has competed in Hawaii and Missouri throughout his high school career.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland and Deering high school players have merged to form the Phoenix softball team as they held their first team-building practice Monday at Deering High amid late March snow. Coach Anais Aguirre said the players will build unity and assess available pitchers while working to move past old rivalries and create a competitive team this season.  Portland Press Herald
