- ➤ A more than 400-foot radio tower built in 1937 and later used for a Stephen King radio station was taken down on Wednesday with a loud boom—local people and former staff gathered to watch the old landmark that broadcast WLBZ which later became WZON. FOX23
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A messy winter storm began Friday night and is set to bring snow turning to sleet and freezing rain today. Western Maine may see up to 8 inches of wintry mix—while near Portland 1 to 3 inches are expected—and the storm could lead to power outages and rough travel conditions on Sunday and Monday. FOX23
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State officials said on Thursday that the federal government ended contracts worth $91 million for Maine and that DHHS workers are bracing for possible layoffs as the agency reviews the impact of these cuts. The move is part of an $11 billion reduction in state and local health programs & has raised worries about Maine’s public health safety net. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ Legislators co-sponsored LD 875 to secure steady funding for Maine’s domestic violence resource centers—which offered free shelter, counseling, and legal support to over 14,000 people last year. The bill passed unanimously in committee and now awaits further votes in the House and Senate. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad Company will close a 24.23-mile rail line from the Deering area in Portland to near Auburn, with abandonment set to take effect on April 27 unless financial help arrives by April 7—local residents can send comments on the Draft EA for 15 days—while its effect on future passenger rail plans stays unclear. - ➤ Today, Portland’s Hearts of Pine take on FC Naples in their first USL League One match after a 4—0 Open Cup win on March 20th; coach Bobby Murphy said his young roster will aim to surprise their opponents. - ➤ Cooper Flagg, the freshman phenom from Maine, scored 30 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 7 assists and made 3 blocks in Duke's win over Arizona in the Sweet 16 game. His performance propelled Duke to the Elite Eight and made him the first Duke player to record 30 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in an NCAA Tournament game since 1984—he is only the second player to achieve 30 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks since 1986.
