Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 2nd of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A section of the ceiling collapsed at Longhorn Steakhouse in South Portland last Friday during the dinner rush and no one was seriously hurt. The restaurant remains closed until it obtains the required permits and completes repairs after an inspection found no structural issues or leaks.  WGME

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cuties is set to open Tuesday, April 8 at 46 Market St. in the former Petite Jacqueline space—initially with evening hours before switching to a full-day schedule on May 11. Co-owners Arvid Brown, Nick Coffin, Garrett Lenderman, Ryan Nielsen and Bryce Summers planned the bar to offer a unique beverage program and a seafood-focused snack menu.  Portland Press Herald
  • L.L.Bean filed a lawsuit on Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland against 4Imprint Inc. for selling a bag called the Boat Tote that it claims copies its famous Boat and Tote bag — the suit accuses the company of trademark infringement, deceptive trade practices and unfair competition while seeking a jury trial, product destruction and damages.  Portland Press Herald
  • Unitil is buying Maine Natural Gas Company from Avangrid for $86 million on a debt-free basis—pending Maine Public Utilities Commission approval. The deal will close by the end of this year and will add about 230 miles of distribution mains serving roughly 6,300 Portland and Augusta customers.  WMTW
  • A sign near the CVS at Northgate Plaza in Portland shows a referral program from Think Energy that offers customers bill credits to reduce electricity costs by up to 100% when 20 friends are referred. Think Energy — a registered electricity supplier with the Maine Public Utilities Commission — said the Free Energy Club is open to current customers who enroll and meet the program criteria.  FOX23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Last Friday, a superior court judge ruled that the old children's museum building can be torn down so the Portland Museum of Art can add new space to its growing collection. Greater Portland Landmarks fought to save the 19th century building but did not stop the demolition plans.  WGME

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Climate Central — a non-profit group of scientists and journalists — found that rainfall intensity in Maine grew 60% over the last 60 years, which raises the risk of flash floods as warmer temperatures lead to heavier downpours.  FOX23
  • Beach restrictions began on April 1 to protect small piping plovers along beaches in Scarborough, Saco and Ogunquit; in Scarborough, some sections ban dogs while others require leashes and in Saco dogs must be leashed until September 30. Officials in Ogunquit banned dogs until September 8—animal control and police will enforce the rules—so the birds can nest safely.  WMTW
  • The Green Home + Energy Show will take place Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Point Community Center in South Portland where homeowners can visit exhibitors, attend workshops from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. + test drive an electric vehicle at the EV Expo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WGME
