GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Portland Police Department held a fitness challenge at the University of Southern Maine Field House on Saturday where participants tried push-ups, sit-ups and a mile-and-a-half run — scores from these tests could be used to strengthen a future application to the force. Sgt. Drew Castonguay said that those who did not meet the standards can train further to try again — officials hope the event motivates more people to build their fitness. WMTW
- ➤ Senate President Mattie Daughtry told a press conference about a bipartisan bill that would double the child tax credit to $600 for each child under 6—helping families face high costs. A public hearing on the bill is set for Tuesday, April 11, at 1 p.m. at the State House. WMTW
- ➤ The updated Maine Uniform Building Code took effect on Monday in towns with over 4,000 residents after 18 months of work, requiring more insulation, ventilation and improved structural guidelines for both new construction and renovations. The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office and Gov. Mills are offering training for builders and code officials — officials say the new standards will lower heating and cooling bills and save $978 per household in the first year. WMTW

- ➤ Former Lewiston standout Dylan Blue scored a short-handed overtime goal on Sunday in Utica—his hat trick capped a 5-4 win over the Idaho Jr. Steelheads that clinched the national championship for the Maine Gladiators 18U. Blue led the tournament with nine goals and two assists in five games and his game-winning effort came during a penalty by his brother. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ The Sea Dogs announced a new parking option as they will use the USM parking garage at 88 Bedford Street for fans to park today at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field — the fee is $3 with $2 for parking and $1 for processing and a 12-minute walk from the ballpark. WMTW
