EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Portland school board advanced a $171.7 million budget to City Council late Tuesday night with minor changes to cover higher health care premiums and added positions in kindergarten literacy, special education, and music. The proposal raises the school portion of the property tax rate by 5.3%—adding about $210 a year for a median-priced home—and City Council will vote on it on May 9 before a public referendum on June 10.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland Public Schools approved a new school calendar for 2025–26 that adds Yom Kippur and Eid al-Fitr after strong support from students, teachers and parents. The board voted unanimously on Tuesday night—this change marks a first step toward reflecting the district's growing religious diversity.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maine Turnpike Authority fixed errors in its E-ZPass system after mid-March messages told drivers to call customer service — on April 8, all toll signs worked correctly — and customers are urged to call if they see the message again.  WMTW
  • A public hearing was held at the State House Tuesday on a bill to expand Maine’s child tax credit that would add $600 per child under six to help cover essentials — including child care, food, and rent — as more than a dozen speakers voiced their support. Lawmakers said the measure, which has bipartisan backing, would give a tax cut to about 174,000 households.  FOX23
