CRIME NEWS

  • Francis Mezan (34-year-old) pleaded guilty on Tuesday in federal court to distributing drugs after video evidence recorded him selling crack cocaine and cocaine to a confidential source on three separate occasions in summer 2024.  WGME

CULTURE NEWS

  • The exhibition Envision Resilience: Shifting Tides and Evolving Landscapes at Space in Portland runs through April 26 and shows works by seven Maine artists who use art to make viewers think about climate change — the show blends natural beauty with lessons on rising sea levels and environmental change.  Portland Press Herald

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Fishermen in federal waters of the Gulf of Maine may face a midseason scallop fishery closure within the next five days as NOAA delays final catch limits amid staffing cutbacks—leaving crews anxious as they near the default quota of 315,449 pounds.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Cape Elizabeth Land Trust announced it will host its fifth annual Earth Day Community Clean Up from Saturday, April 19 to Sunday, April 27. Volunteers will have over a dozen cleanup sites (including school grounds, trails and busy roads) and can pick up supplies (trash bags and gloves) at the office from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday next week.  Portland Press Herald
  • On Monday, 55 gallons of kerosene-grade aviation fuel spilled at Brunswick Landing and officials reported that 15 to 20 gallons seeped into a storm drain. The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority—working with an environmental partner and Maine DEP—said the spill is contained with no safety risk and that further updates will come.  FOX23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Traci Gere (D-Kennebunkport) sponsors LD 1184 which would require municipalities to report annual building, demolition, and occupancy permit data to help track progress toward building 84,000 new homes by 2030. A pilot program in Cumberland County showed that municipal counts can differ from census estimates by up to 176 homes, prompting calls for more precise data collection.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows issued the veto question for the state’s $11.3 billion biennial budget—Rep. Gary Drinkwater from Milford filed a people’s veto application on March 26—to let voters pause state funding if 67,682 valid signatures are submitted by 5 p.m. on June 18, which would force a government shutdown until a new budget is passed.  WMTW
  • Maine’s Department of Transportation today unveiled a three-year plan to repair bridges, roads and pedestrian pathways across the state plus 2,716 work items in Portland’s Libbytown will see a new roundabout and improved bike routes, with work starting this year and expected to finish by 2027 at an estimated cost of $4.8 billion.  WGME
