CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Skowhegan man, Rhaheem Friend, was charged with manslaughter and OUI drugs with death after his vehicle went off South Solon Road in Solon on Aug 7th when his crash killed his passenger Nicholas Foss (he is already in Somerset County Jail on unrelated charges) and left Friend with serious injuries. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On April 5, Brunswick High senior Alexei Douhovnikoff traveled alone to Windham High School + competed against teams from across the state to win the Maine State Quiz Bowl. On April 7, junior Indigo Selinger tied for best overall with a perfect score at the State Math Meet + his win capped a strong week for Brunswick High. Portland Press Herald
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Harpswell residents worry that PFOS chemicals from firefighting foam at the former Brunswick Naval Air Base have contaminated local coves and waterways. They are calling for the toxic foam to be removed from Brunswick Executive Airport hangars — tests show water PFOS levels have increased greatly and biochemistry professor David Page warned that these chemicals stay in the body. - ➤ NOAA ended La Nina today—saying that neutral conditions now prevail in the eastern Pacific—and this change makes Maine’s weather less predictable while raising the chance of an active Atlantic hurricane season as warmer seas could boost storm activity. FOX23
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge blocked the USDA from freezing Maine's federal funds—saying the funds must be released immediately after the state was accused of not meeting Title IX rules. Maine sued the agency and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Monday and the order remains until a preliminary hearing is set. Portland Press Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Portland man Ralph Carmona was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s after a hard talk with his wife—he began running to fight the disease—and will run this year’s Boston Marathon. He drove every two weeks for 10 years from Portland to Boston for treatment and is taking part in a clinical trial for a new FDA-approved drug that may slow the disease. WMTW
