COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Village Sauna held 10 sold-out sessions at East End Beach this weekend, offering hot sauna time with cool ocean dips. City officials and owners are discussing permits for future pop-up events and a possible permanent installation (reflecting growing interest in waterfront saunas).  Portland Press Herald
  • USM Gorham hosted the C-U Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge on Saturday, drawing over 100 adults and kids to raise nearly $35,000 for the Maine Cancer Foundation (this 32-year-old event was initiated by local leader Jon Paradise).  WGME
  • Evan Feldman and Chad Gothier rescued porcupine Wilbur after he was found hanging in a tree at a Topsham Toyota dealership in November. They called Wilderness Miracles for help — the animal was treated for dehydration and a limp before being released into the wild on Sunday.  WMTW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine renewable energy leaders are preparing to export clean wind power from northern Maine to New England — a regional effort that will create jobs, lower energy costs and boost local tax revenue amid rising electricity prices.  Portland Press Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Governor Janet Mills signed a state budget that bans cellphones during the school day in public schools statewide. School boards have until August 1 to set policies while the Maine Department of Education provides model guidelines and allows exceptions for enrolled programs.  WGAN
  • Brunswick’s school board approved a $61.2M budget with nearly $2M in cuts and eight position eliminations, reducing the tax impact to 2.89% today. The Town Council will review the proposal on Monday and may tweak it before the public hearing on Apr. 27 and a June referendum.  Portland Press Herald

  • Portland’s historic Boyd Block was rebuilt for $22M over four years by East Brown Cow & now houses 16 boutique hotel apartments in the Old Port; the project recently won a 2026 Honor Award for historic preservation.  Portland Press Herald

  • The New Hampshire Fisher Cats beat the Sea Dogs 15-9 in their six-game series finale in Portland today, with first baseman Drew Ehrhard driving in five runs. The Sea Dogs now stand at 4-4 and will head to a six-game series against the Altoona Curve starting Tuesday night.  Portland Press Herald
  • At Cross Insurance Arena on Sunday, Maine Mariners swept the Norfolk Admirals 2-1 as Deveaux scored late and Cavallin made 26 saves; the team also signed defenseman Dylan MacKinnon to an amateur tryout contract.  Portland Press Herald
