Good morning, Portland.

It will run on Wednesdays and Saturdays through the end of November from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and accepts SNAP/EBT benefits—also offering double SNAP spending with Maine Harvest Bucks.
Yesterday, the Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs held a public hearing at the State House on two bills that would limit or ban phones in classrooms.
Supporters said the change would help kids focus on learning — while opponents argued schools should decide their own phone rules.
Restoration work on USM’s Academy Building found hidden student notes from the 1800s in the walls and floors; workers fixed wood rot using old methods and noted sums, lists, and funny drawings of teachers (the building was built in 1806 as a private school).
The notes are now kept in special collections for study.
Maine farmers protested federal cuts in Augusta yesterday when the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association led a tractor brigade from the state library to the State House—citing over $4 million cut from local food purchasing and $12 million withheld for conservation projects—and urged Maine’s congressional delegation to restore the programs.
Portland city leaders have adopted the new Vision Zero Plan to reduce pedestrian deaths after over 150 people were involved in traffic crashes last year—29 communities will adjust roadway designs with roundabouts, speed bumps and speed limit changes to cut fatalities and serious injuries.
