CULTURE NEWS

  • Maine Seaweed Week will run from Friday through May 4 in Portland — the seventh annual event that celebrates the state's seaweed harvest with local food and drinks. Josh Rogers of Heritage Seaweed explained that the festival will showcase Maine's rich ocean bounty.  WGME

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The scallop fishery for the Northern Gulf reopened Monday morning after being closed since April 11—federal regulators set a total allowable landing of 712,093 pounds for 2025 with 675,563 pounds reserved for the Northern Gulf to boost revenue projections by $180.8 million. NOAA Fisheries guidelines also adjust seasonal closures and access areas to reduce bycatch until the quota is met.  WMTW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Portland’s Curriculum and Policy Committee advanced a plan last week that will require high schools to collect students’ cell phones at the start of the day—returning them at day’s end. Some teachers and administrators voiced support for reducing distractions but raised concerns over how schools will implement the policy, which is headed to the full school board for consideration.  FOX23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Gulf of Maine Research Institute defines marine heatwaves as periods of at least five days when sea temperatures remain unusually high based on a 30-year average. Since 2010, heatwave days have risen over 2,000% along the East Coast—forcing marine species to move and potentially shifting local fisheries.  WMTW
  • NOAA announced on Friday that it raised catch limits for scallop fishing in the Gulf of Maine, ending a temporary pause—this change lets fishermen resume the regulated season.  FOX23

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Portland realtor Tom Landry said many Maine homeowners are listing their second homes amid economic uncertainty driven by federal policies + tariffs as they seek liquidity while home values level off. Experts noted that increased listings, now near 2020 levels, signal a cautious market with high mortgage rates slowing new buyer interest.  WGME

  • High school tennis coaches in Maine struggled with practice plans canceled by rain, wind, and even snow, which reduced the days to set up match ladders.
