  • The Portland Symphony Orchestra is marking its 100th anniversary with a special week of concerts that will play movie music from a film set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away—music director Eckard Preu said the upcoming performance will honor the classic score.  FOX23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers on Friday at the Housing and Economic Development Committee heard from renters, advocates, landlords and developers urging passage of bills designed to protect tenants and boost housing production—proposals include a $25 million fund to keep an eviction-prevention program running and measures to ease construction regulations. One proposal for rent control drew heavy criticism from landlords while other bills aim to reduce barriers and promote denser, affordable housing.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine lawmakers passed an emergency bill that allocated $3.5 million to add five new public defenders after a judge ruled the state had failed to provide timely counsel, and the law took effect Wednesday + it now lets judges appoint private attorneys when needed.  FOX23
  • Maine senators Angus King and Susan Collins are pushing a bill to ban offshore drilling along the coast as they warn that drilling could harm the vital coastal industries—tourism and fishing—that bring billions each year.  FOX23
  • Maine’s BMV offices are swamped with visitors seeking a Real ID before the May 7 deadline when travelers must show a Real ID or passport for flights—Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said extra staff was called in to handle record numbers.   • Maine's Total Coverage will host Spring into Hope: Maine Fashion Show on May 3 at Dunegrass Country Club in Old Orchard Beach—an event featuring runway shows, DJ Brandon Aull, chef-curated appetizers and drinks, raffles and a photo booth that will raise funds to support Sweetser’s mental health treatment for children and families in need.  WMTW
