- ➤ The Shred-A-Thon event returns to help residents dispose of old documents to prevent identity theft. It will take place on Friday, May 1, from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the studios (entrance on Washington Avenue) at 81 Northport Drive in Portland. FOX23
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Cancer survivor Eliza Ruth Watson returns to the stage as Mama Cass Elliot at The Footlights Theatre (in Falmouth) from May 7 to 23. The one-woman show features new songs and updated dialogue, offering a hopeful look at her renewed voice and life. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ Seafarer’s Friend, a nearly 200-year-old maritime nonprofit, displayed a Titanic life vest at the Maine Mall over the weekend for local visitors. The artifact, one of only 12 recovered the day after the sinking, is now housed at the Portland Seafarer’s Center (Commercial Street). WGME

- ➤ Gov. Janet Mills signed a supplemental budget that adds $2 million to the Community Aging in Place program to pay for home repairs that help older residents stay safe and reduce emergency calls. Portland Press Herald
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Portland police warned after seven suspected overdoses occurred in under 20 hours on Sunday and advised residents to carry naloxone available at local pharmacies + community organizations. FOX23
- ➤ Portland family doctor Dr. James Riddleberger warned that false vaccine claims are confusing parents and raising risks of diseases like measles (allegedly spurred by a national figure). He urged elected officials to defend reliable vaccine science so children remain protected. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ Weston Quinn, 9, from Raymond published Juvenile Epilepsy Warrior after being diagnosed with juvenile epilepsy and working with Play Warriors in Windham. He promoted the book with family and therapy staff to raise funds for epilepsy research. Portland Press Herald

- ➤ Downtown Portland will soon see several new housing sites that include 356 new homes within a quarter-mile area — of which 60 are dedicated to Youth Family Outreach — funded by $28 million from state and federal housing streams. Governor Mills toured the area on Monday. WGME

- ➤ Maine native Cooper Flagg won NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 21.0 points per game and becoming the youngest to score 35, 40, 45, and 50 points in a game (record-setting). Drafted first overall by the Dallas Mavericks from Duke, the 19-year-old earned the honor on Monday, Apr. 27. WMTW
