CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Portland by the Foot owner Dugan Murphy is offering a walking tour that helps visitors learn about our city’s history and sights. The tour is expected to attract families and friends as local tourism picks up this season. FOX23
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Maine will begin replacing its nearly 25-year-old chickadee license plates with the new pine tree design this Thursday, May 1. Drivers renewing registration can choose between plates with or without a pine tree and may pay a $25 fee to keep their current plate number. FOX23
- ➤ Portland City Council approved a $205,000 grant to remove 850 cubic yards of soil found to be contaminated with arsenic and lead at Fitzpatrick Stadium—discovered during improvements by the Hearts of Pine soccer team near King Middle School. The council also paused a vote on a new 180-day hold for concert venue projects and approved a first read on pausing new hotel projects as it addresses housing and safety concerns. FOX23
- ➤ Representative Amy Arata introduced a bill that will require protocols for handling human trafficking victims after one of her properties was used as a sex trafficking site—this bipartisan measure aims to protect immigrant victims while Public Safety said it supports the bill's intent but requests language changes. - ➤ Longtime restaurant owner David Turin from David’s Restaurant said homeless activity in Monument Square has made his business unsafe and he wrote to Mayor Mark Dion asking for increased police patrol and city cleanup measures—he plans to start outdoor dining soon. FOX23
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Portland Public Health expanded STI testing by starting walk-in hours on Monday from 9 a.m. to noon at the clinic on Forest Ave while keeping appointment hours on Tuesday (today) and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Health officials are monitoring an HIV outbreak in Penobscot County where 23 cases since October all involved drug injection use and most patients were unhoused. - ➤ Portland Public Health now serves STI testing with appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.—and beginning on Monday, walk-ins will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon at 39 Forest Ave with a $60 fee. The new hours come as staff monitor an HIV outbreak in Penobscot County that recorded 23 cases since October. FOX23
- ➤ Federal funding cuts from the Health and Human Services Department ended the $1 million Health Disparities Grant on March 24, forcing Maine community paramedicine programs to cancel plans to expand services (Waterville Fire Department planned to grow from three to five days). Agencies like Portland Fire Department and MaineHealth now must seek new funds to keep at-home care running (Memorial Ambulance Corps faced a similar cut). FOX23
