Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of April.
Good morning, Portland.
Police said the body of 49 year old Damian Thomas was found in an attic at 55 Grant Street on April 11 — he was reported missing in March and last seen alive in late January, and his death does not appear suspicious as the investigation continues.
Investigators searched a home at 11 Olympia St. at about 8 a.m. yesterday to study the scene of a March 6 fire that killed Douglas Grant and injured four others at a boarding house—authorities will work at the scene for two more days and have closed the area to traffic.
An investigation released Tuesday found a pattern of hazing on the Mt. Ararat hockey team that involved bullying and sexually inappropriate conduct affecting at least four students — school officials suspended two coaches and senior players while the team faces a potential two-year suspension from the Maine Principals’ Association.
Terry, a seasonal propane customer who uses fuel only for his stove, said his provider charged him a minimum usage fee even when he bought very little propane.
The Maine Attorney General said the fee is legal if it is clearly disclosed and reasonable — it could be considered unfair under the Unfair Trade Practices Act if it is not.
Advocates gathered at the State House on Tuesday — calling for improved transportation access across Maine.
They pushed for bills to set up a statewide selection process, boost community transportation coordination, and reduce transit pollution.
A new report from the Alzheimer's Association shows that more than 7 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s and 29,600 Mainers aged 65 or older have the disease—with 543 deaths in Maine and 66,000 unpaid family caregivers logging 102 million care hours in 2024.
The association supports LD 107—a bill that passed out of committee—to require insurance coverage for blood-based biomarker tests for early detection.
