Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 6th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portland City Council approved a $10,000 donation to launch a refugee soccer pilot program that Hearts of Pine will manage for asylum-seekers not allowed to work. Mayor Mark Dion said the program, limited to legally present refugees, will start the first week in May and run through the end of June (city officials may consider making it permanent if the trial succeeds).  WGME

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Feelz Consignment Store in North Windham will host a three-day thrifting tour from May 9 to May 11 with four other local businesses. Shoppers will collect stamps and enter a raffle for donated prizes — each business offering unique deals — to help boost local business cooperation.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Portland Tenants Union reported on Monday that over three-fifths of rental listings appeared to violate rent control rules by being unregistered or inaccurately registered—raising concerns about systemic noncompliance at a public meeting. Meanwhile, the City Council extended the hotel development moratorium for 180 days, approved a new police contract, and advanced the school budget for a second reading later this month.  Portland Press Herald
