Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 7th of May.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Ariana Tito, a 19-year-old from Biddeford, pleaded guilty on May 5 to shooting her brother’s fiancée in Saco in an effort to silence a witness—she was sentenced to 15 years with 8 years unsuspended and 4 years probation after a plea deal that dropped an attempted murder charge. WGME
- ➤ Portland police and the U.S. Marshals Service issued a federal warrant on May 6 for 46-year-old Kristopher Haken for failing to appear in court on charges from a deadly shooting in Morrill's Corner on July 30 that left four injured and Susan McHugh dead—Haken, a member of the Outlaws Motorcycle Club who was arrested in Vermont in April for a parole violation, posted bail and did not return, and is now considered dangerous while authorities believe several people are helping him evade arrest. - ➤ On Monday around 12:15 p.m. in Portland, a 33-year-old man named Nicholas Lavoie hit a police officer on the head when officers tried to arrest him for outstanding warrants, causing lacerations and scratches, and he was charged with assault on a police officer and failure to submit to arrest before being taken to jail. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Portland filed a lawsuit in Cumberland County Superior Court to stop DHHS from enforcing a rule that cuts millions from the city's emergency homeless shelter funding. The complaint asks for a temporary injunction and challenges the new rule that would reduce reimbursements from $84 to $48 per guest per day (based on a zero-bedroom rate). Portland Press Herald
- ➤ Portland City Council accepted a $10,000 donation to start a pilot soccer program run by Hearts of Pine for asylum-seekers who are not permitted to work—Mayor Mark Dion said no taxpayer funds were used. The program will begin in the first week of May and run through the end of June—success may lead to a permanent league. FOX23
- ➤ Today, TSA no longer accepts state-issued IDs that are not REAL ID compliant for adult airline passengers—those without a REAL ID can use other approved documents like a U.S. passport to pass security. Maine residents have faced long DMV wait times recently, and officials say REAL IDs will continue to be issued at BMV offices after today. WMTW
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ MaineGeneral Health will cut pediatric psychological services at the Edmund Ervin Pediatric Center in Augusta because MaineCare reimbursements do not cover costs and the center operates at a million-dollar annual loss, leaving families of children with disabilities scrambling for care. The cuts will also end psychological evaluations, and parents may have to seek services out of state (the last program serving Maine’s most vulnerable children). FOX23
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Developers have unveiled plans for Old Port Square, a four-acre project on Middle, Exchange, Fore and Union Streets that will bring new homes, hotels, offices and restaurants to downtown.
