Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 10th of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lake Region High School students Daniel Rollins (class of 2025) and Tristan Benton (class of 2027) won Maine’s statewide Stock Market Game by earning virtual gains of $12,489.45 and $11,100.60 respectively. They said the game showed them that planning for the future works better than seeking quick wins as they used a digital platform since September.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Last year on May 11, Mainers saw a bright aurora when a strong solar storm lit the sky and reached areas as far south as the Caribbean. Today the sun remains active, and experts say the ongoing solar maximum may trigger another strong storm—bringing the chance for new, dazzling aurora displays.  WGME

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers are planning to change Maine's child welfare system by moving the current child welfare ombudsman to a new independent agency (with more responsibilities). The bill has bipartisan support and would give a better voice for children with the governor and legislature.  FOX23
