  • Ogunquit businesses are anticipating a busy summer as Memorial Day weekend begins visitor season; owners say that while rising gas prices may keep some locals nearby, residents still flock to the town + drive its vibrant economy and support thousands of daily visitors during peak season.  FOX23

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Memorial Day weekend, Civil War reenactors from the Third Maine Regiment Volunteer Infantry demonstrated period drills and musket firing on Peaks Island at the 5th Maine Museum. The museum (built as a memorial in 1888) now displays war artifacts and encourages community learning.  WMTW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA expects a record for Memorial Day weekend as 45 million Americans have traveled at least 50 miles from home since Thursday and will continue driving until Monday; in New England, 2 million people, mostly coming by car from Massachusetts & New Hampshire, are visiting local spots like Red's Eats.  WMTW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thomas College in Waterville will launch its Bachelor of Science in Coaching program (its first of its kind in Maine) this August. Professor Greg King said the program aims to develop skilled coaches ready for leadership roles while offering courses in management, leadership, and sport psychology.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bill McPherson delivered 21 million honeybees in 432 bee boxes (weighing over 70,000 lbs) to Brodis Blueberries in Hope today to help pollinate wild blueberries for three weeks before the bees return to Florida in November.  Portland Press Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kettle Cuisine recalled 24 oz cups of Whole Foods Market Kitchen Minestrone Soup on Saturday, May 23 because the product may contain undeclared shrimp, posing a risk for those with allergies, and customers in Maine and nearby states can return the soup for a full refund as no illnesses were reported.  WGME

SPORTS NEWS

  • South Portland’s baseball team beat Scarborough 6-1 on Saturday by scoring five runs in the 10th inning (Iacuessa and Main led the pitching efforts). Other high school events saw wins for Falmouth, Thornton Academy, Maranacook and Old Orchard Beach in baseball, softball and lacrosse contests.  Portland Press Herald
  • Saturday night, the Portland Hearts of Pine drew 1-1 with Greenville Triump SC at Fitzpatrick Stadium. A penalty kick by Ollie Wright in the 78th minute tied the game after a handball by Anthony Patti led to his red card, and the team improved to 2-2-5 in USL League One.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Reading Fightin Phils scored six runs in the seventh inning to break up Portland's no-hit bid — a moment that snapped the Sea Dogs’ four-game winning streak — in a 7-3 loss at Hadlock Field Saturday afternoon.  Portland Press Herald
  • Saturday, several high school baseball and softball games took place as teams aimed for playoffs, with a championship matchup scheduled for today. Highlights include a 6-1 baseball win by South Portland in extra innings at Falmouth and a strong inning from Thornton Academy in softball (follow-up games to decide champions).  WMTW
