  • On Monday, the 15th annual Miles for Mills Memorial Day Weekend 5k takes place in Portland to support the Travis Mills Foundation for veterans and families. The event welcomes walkers and runners, featuring food trucks + face painting, bounce houses as organizers aim for 2,000 participants and $200,000 in donations.  WGME

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Makoto Sushi Bar and Grill in South Portland suffered heavy damage after a fire started in its kitchen ceiling exhaust hood system Sunday night (8:37 p.m. response by firefighters from South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Portland) and will remain closed for repairs.  WGAN

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine families are rethinking summer trips as rising fuel costs drive up prices; AAA reports regular gas is $4.48, with local stations charging $4.59 and diesel at $5.86. Experts warn prices may hit $5 per gallon — until a U.S.-Iran deal opens the Strait of Hormuz.  FOX23
  • A study by UMA's business school professor Angie Zheng found consumers are willing to pay over $3 extra for lobster rolls caught with ropeless technology to reduce harm to endangered whales, based on a survey of 2,000 people.   • Maine Audubon will open a new education center at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth tomorrow. The eco-friendly building will host an open house from 3-6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m.  FOX23
  • Senior class president Colby Lewis of Freeport High School leads a mental health project with a community walk at Pineland Farms on May 30, plus a project presentation early June as he reflects on local mental health needs ahead of graduation on June 13 at Merrill Auditorium.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine Audubon is opening the Ann and Jim Hancock Native Plant Education Center at Gilsland Farm in Falmouth on May 27th. The new building, built with local wood and solar panels (designed to support native plant education and conservation), will host an open house from 3-6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting at 4 p.m.  WGME

  • Bernie Sanders joined local candidates Graham Platner and Troy Jackson on Memorial Day at Thompson’s Point as Platner ramped up his Senate campaign against incumbent Susan Collins.   • Varsity Maine previews local sports this week as track meets may see record-breaking performances - Fryeburg baseball faces key opponents on Monday and Thornton lacrosse tests its unbeaten run Tuesday at local venues.  Portland Press Herald
  • Cape Elizabeth high school baseball shut out Freeport 11-0 on Monday at Freeport in a five inning Class B South game; pitchers Max Hayward and Zach van Huystee combined for a two hitter while Joseph Grela led the offense as the team improved to 10-4 with its fifth win in six games.  Portland Press Herald
