- ➤ After a three-and-a-half year project, Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth has been restored with new windows, a freshly painted exterior, and a new roof—replacing the carpet on the first floor that was damaged by flooding last year. FOX23
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Researchers at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute said mussels in Casco Bay are moving to deeper water because the ocean is warming and predators are increasing; this shift may affect local harvesters who rely on these shellfish. The team is using new acoustic survey techniques (a tool that sends sound waves to map the water floor) and invites residents to help by sending photos from low tide (when mussels are easier to find). - ➤ Senator Tim Nangle from Windham has proposed a bill to create a fund to help towns pay legal fees when they challenge waterfront property owners who break Maine laws—if a town wins in court, it will repay the fund with its awarded fees. The legislature will consider the bill in its next session and Nangle said he will work with the DEP on its wording. WGAN
- ➤ The Maine Warden Service and Aroostook County Sheriff's Office found a missing 71-year-old man Saturday morning near the wind towers in Oakfield after his truck got stuck and he called his daughter for help—he was evaluated by EMS but refused hospital treatment and was later reunited with his family. - ➤ Maine lawmakers have not settled on the state budget as the session ends on June 18 — disputes remain over tax increases, spending cuts, and a budget shortfall that affects programs like MaineCare and child care funding. Gov. Mills will meet with bipartisan lawmakers next week to urge a deal that keeps basic services running. Portland Press Herald
