  • Brickyard Hollow Brewing in Yarmouth will host an outdoor fundraiser on Saturday, June 20 at 236 Main Street with live music, cornhole and raffles (sales of 85 cases of a limited-release Kölsch for $200 each fund Time to Compete, a nonprofit aiding young adults with cancer).  Portland Press Herald
  • South Portland’s Taj Indian Cuisine will be recognized Thursday by the Maine Public Health Association as a Public Health Business Champion for its public health efforts, including free meals during the pandemic and free Thanksgiving meals (it is the third time a food business has been honored in the awards).  Portland Press Herald

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Robbins Lumber resumed full operations at its Searsmont mill on Tuesday, May 26, 11 days after a fire and explosion on May 15 left a Maine firefighter dead and 12 first responders injured, with investigators demobilizing the scene on May 25 while injured employees continued treatment.  WMTW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Belleville will close its North Street flagship on Monday, June 8 after nine years, as owners shift focus to wholesale operations and weekend retail hours at the Forest Ave location + plan to expand offerings soon.  Portland Press Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • New Zealand indie band The Beths will perform live at 8 p.m. Saturday at the State Theatre on Congress St in Portland. Tickets cost $25 in advance, $30 at the door & the show features hits from their new album along with an opening act by Squirrel Flower.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick launches its summer season this week with song, dance and laughs as artistic director Curt Dale Clark previews a fresh lineup of shows at the venue.  WGME

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A recent Brookings report found that in 2024 nearly 46% of Maine households struggled to cover basic needs, and Allina Diaz of Maine Equal Justice said rising costs have put economic pressure on both low-income & middle-income families as federal aid subsided after the pandemic.  Portland Press Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Portland Public Schools sought community input on reorganization of its middle schools (prompted by declining enrollment and repair needs) by holding a virtual session Monday and hosting an in-person meeting today at Ocean Avenue Elementary School.  Portland Press Herald

  • Maine harbormasters manage moorings + coordinate safety along the coastline; their duties range from settling a lobster turf dispute in South Thomaston to aiding local search and rescue, as one even campaigns for U.S. Senate while Portland’s team works daily to protect the harbor.  Portland Press Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Alpha-gal syndrome, which causes red meat and dairy allergies, remains a low health risk as lone star ticks appear in Maine; MaineHealth vector ecologist Chuck Lubelczyk said his team is tracking ticks brought by migratory birds (from York to Aroostook) and advises residents to check for ticks after outdoor outings.  WGME
