EDUCATION NEWS

  • Portland Public Schools now offer daily halal-certified meals for all students following a districtwide rollout in April. The program partners with local groups to provide choices like halal burritos and vegan options—ensuring meals match cultural and dietary needs.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland voters approved the fiscal 2026 school budget by a 2-to-1 margin on June 10 — nearly 67 percent supported the $171.8 million plan and 62 percent backed extending the referendum for three more years. Retired Portland High School teacher Jayne Sawtelle won the at-large board seat with nearly 75 percent of the vote and must run again in November to retain the seat.  West End News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Summer is bringing warmer nights in Maine as climate change pushes temperatures higher. Since 1970, summer nights have grown nearly 4°F warmer and now feature over 30 nights per year above 70°F—changes that could affect sleep and increase energy use—experts say.  WGME

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Chellie Pingree admitted she did not properly disclose her purchase of six U.S. Treasury securities (valued between $90,000 and $300,000) on February 5 and filed the paperwork nearly three months after the STOCK Act deadline. She paid a $200 penalty and said she supports stronger rules to prevent personal trading by lawmakers.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland plans to lease a building at the Barron Center Campus along Brighton Avenue for a new childcare center—designed for children 5 and under that will serve both local residents and city workers. The housing committee will discuss the proposal on Tuesday, June 17th.  FOX23
  • The Maine Legislature passed a bill to stop ticket price gouging and sent it to Gov. Mills with 10 days to act—ticket sellers must show all fees up front, ban bots and fake websites, and face civil penalties if they break the rules. Arts groups back the law to help fans get fair prices and support local venues.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Maine Senate voted in favor of a bill today that requires mobile home park owners to notify residents of pending sales so they can match third party offers. The governor has 10 days to sign the bill—if not, it will become law without her signature.  FOX23
