Former corrections officer Gratien Milandou-Wamba was arrested by ICE for an expired visa after working at Cumberland County Jail and is now detained at Strafford County Jail in New Hampshire while his asylum hearing is set for October (his attorney said he did not expect the arrest).
Lawmakers in Augusta advanced a bill to cut state and local taxes for middle class Mainers earning between $50,000 and $240,000.
The measure would raise more than $65 million for health, education and public safety programs next year + increase taxes on the top 5 percent and will face additional votes in the Senate.
The Maine House passed a bill by one vote that bans police from working with ICE solely on immigration enforcement—allowing cooperation for criminal cases—while the measure awaits additional votes.
MaineHousing has awarded $13.4 million to build 129 new affordable rental homes in Lewiston and Portland.
The funds will go to two apartment buildings in Lewiston + one in Portland as the Legislature considers additional affordable housing measures.
