ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Three people were injured during a fireworks malfunction at Sunday River Resort in Newry on Saturday when a 5-inch shell and mortar tube failed — Misty Mellor was seriously injured and flown to Maine Medical Center while Jeremy Mitchell and Robert Bradford received treatment, and the State Fire Marshal is investigating the malfunction. - ➤ A Bangor man is in critical condition after crashing his motorcycle into a guardrail on the northbound I-95 on-ramp at mile marker 133 in Fairfield on July 6 — he was not wearing a helmet and was transferred from a Waterville hospital to a Portland facility while investigators review if speed was a factor. - ➤ A firework shell and mortar tube malfunction at Sunday River injured three pyrotechnic crew members on Saturday night — one was airlifted with serious injuries, one was treated and released, and one had minor injuries as officials investigated the cause. Portland Press Herald
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Randy Marcotte, a 64-year-old man, was jailed in York County after he chased and threatened people with a hockey stick at 7 Corner's Store in Lyman on Saturday afternoon; deputies arrested him during a traffic stop, recovered his hockey stick and other weapons, and he now faces charges for Criminal Threatening with a Dangerous Weapon, violating bail conditions, and Driving to Endanger (he is held without bail). - ➤ York County Emergency Management Agency launched an emergency alert system for beaches in Kennebunk, Ogunquit, Old Orchard Beach, Wells and York that sends safety updates about severe weather, surf advisories and missing children via text. Beachgoers can sign up by texting a code to 226787—alerts are managed through the Rave system. WMTW
- ➤ Andre Briere, the new head of the Maine Turnpike Authority, outlined a two-year plan starting in August to improve the 109-mile toll highway by upgrading digital systems, enhancing toll plaza efficiency, and adding better food options at service plazas—meant to restore transparency and trust with drivers. He said keeping tolls low is key to protecting Maine drivers while ensuring the highway remains well-funded. Portland Press Herald
