COMMUNITY NEWS

  • STRIVE is hosting its annual 5K run and walk this Sunday at Foden Road with a kids fun run, a 5K race and a free block party—an event that supports tweens, teens and young adults with intellectual disabilities. Local families can join to back this community-focused nonprofit effort.  FOX23
  • The Portland Sea Dogs are hosting their first Beer Festival today at Hadlock Field. Maine breweries will serve their best new and classic beers—fans can also enjoy music, games and a free plastic beer cup for the first 2,000 visitors.  WGME

CULTURE NEWS

  • MaineDOT is replacing the 1932 Frank J. Wood Bridge that connects Brunswick and Topsham, and Brunswick Public Art will repurpose pieces of the old bridge into sculptures—designed to capture its history. The new bridge is expected to open next year.  WGME

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Customers in Freeport are buying solar panels, heat pumps, and electric vehicles before federal tax credits end — the solar credit will expire Dec. 31 and the EV credit ends Sept. 30 — after a major tax bill removed several clean energy incentives. Local business leaders say demand will stay high until the credits vanish, though a slowdown is expected after the deadlines.  WGME

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction is underway on the Close the Gap project in Scarborough—partners add 1.6 miles of off-road trail linking the road segment to the northern trail near the Wainwright Sports Complex. This work will create a 16-mile continuous connection from Bug Light in South Portland to downtown Saco and will be completed in phases by October 2027.  Portland Press Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • MaineHealth surgeons Dr. Liz Turner, Dr. Laura Withers + Dr. Kathreen Lee are training for the 18th Tri for a Cure triathlon on Sunday, July 20 to raise funds for the Maine Cancer Foundation’s cancer prevention, early detection and screening, and to support access to care + they meet after work to swim, bike and run while managing family and work demands.  WMTW

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Maine has the largest moose population in the lower 48 states and officials advise visitors to head north and west for a better chance to see one. They recommend searching early in the morning or late in the afternoon (and using patience during the rut and hunting season), as the animals tend to move around more at these times.  WMTW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Maine native Cooper Flagg made his NBA debut on July 11th for Dallas in the Summer League by scoring 10 points, grabbing six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a key block — his play helped the Mavericks win 87-85 over Los Angeles. Coach Jason Kidd said Flagg will play as a point guard in upcoming games — a role that builds on his versatile skills — after signing his contract last week.  WMTW
