Good morning, Portland.
The Maine International Film Festival in Waterville will show the documentary “The Negotiator” at the Opera House at 7 p.m. on July 16 as its centerpiece film.
The film follows former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell’s work on the Good Friday Agreement to end decades of conflict in Northern Ireland—his Waterville roots and longtime friendship with filmmaker Trevor Birney helped shape the project.
Indie-pop band Lucius will perform new album songs at Portland’s State Theatre on Wednesday, July 23 at 8 p.m. + they will also play at Bar Harbor’s Criterion Theatre on Thursday, July 24 at 7 p.m. The band will feature its dual lead singers + a live set that includes hits and a cover of R.E.M.'s 'Everybody Hurts'.
At Bar Harbor’s Abbe Museum, the exhibit In the Shadow of the Eagle offers an indigenous view of America’s 250th anniversary by displaying art and artifacts that reframe the founding narrative.
Tribal leaders including Zeke Crofton-Macdonald and James Francis Sr. discussed indigenous history during a panel at the Dawnland Festival— the exhibit will remain open through October 2026.
MaineHealth’s chief government affairs officer warned that up to 10,000 residents may lose ACA coverage and 40,000 may lose Medicaid coverage as the new tax bill is fully implemented.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the bill adds $50 billion for rural hospitals—though experts worry that may not prevent care access issues.
Cooper Flagg, a rookie from Newport, scored 31 points on Saturday night in his second summer league game against the Spurs, though the Mavericks lost the contest.
