CULTURE NEWS

  • The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument’s new welcome center, called Tekαkαpimək, opened on June 21 and tells the land's history from the Native American perspective. The center was created with input from tribal leaders, private groups, and federal officials using philanthropic funds from L.L. Bean + Burt’s Bees.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A strong thunderstorm moved through York and Cumberland Counties on July 20 with wind gusts up to 60 mph, half dollar sized hail and frequent lightning that caused power outages and wind damage. The storm weakened before reaching the coast and knocked down a tree in Westbrook — a sign of its intensity across Western Maine.  WMTW
