CRIME NEWS

  • Portland police responded to reports of gunfire along Bishop Street last Saturday evening—searching the wooded area near the University of New England campus and placing the school on lockdown with instructions for those on campus to contact security.  Portland Press Herald

  • Kittery Trading Post is hosting the Tunnel to Towers 9/11 Never Forget mobile exhibit, a free museum in an 83-foot tractor trailer that shows artifacts like parts of the World Trade Center and first responder gear to help visitors remember 9/11— the exhibit is open today from 10 a.m.—6 p.m.  FOX23
  • Brunswick Naval Aviation Museum showed its restored P-2 Neptune at Brunswick Landing on Friday. The old plane took four years and $60,000 to fix—honoring local veterans and those who served.  Portland Press Herald
  • On Saturday, Running With Scissors hosted the seventh annual Print Jam in Portland where a steam roller pressed inked wood blocks to print images on muslin cloth — a unique display that also featured booths with live printing on t-shirts and tote bags. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Smoke from Canadian wildfires moved into Maine early Saturday morning—DEP said air quality was unhealthy in parts of the state, and residents in sensitive groups were advised to stay indoors. The agency expects air quality to be moderate today across most areas.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A ruling from the state’s highest court is expected later this year and could change public beach access by challenging a 1989 law that limits intertidal use in Maine. The case (Peter Masucci v. Judy’s Moody) began in Wells and may allow more families to use the beach if the court rules in favor of public access.  Portland Press Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former field hockey coaches and players including Theresa Arsenault, Madeline Wagner and Ellie Quinn officiated 36 matches at the Victories over Violence tournament at Thomas College on Saturday—raising funds for domestic violence projects across Maine—and reuniting with past teammates.  Portland Press Herald
  • Early Saturday, 250 swimmers and 150 kayakers raced 2.4 miles from Peak's Island to East End Beach in cold Casco Bay to raise about $180,000 for YMCA youth swim programs. Winners said the chilly race proved a tough test of endurance — a tradition that began before World War II.  FOX23
