Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 28th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A driver found an injured person lying on Ginn Road off Payne Road at 11:20 p.m. on Saturday night and the person was taken to a nearby hospital while Scarborough, South Portland and Maine State Police investigated the cause — the public is asked to call with any information.  FOX23

CRIME NEWS

  • Windham police are searching for Clifford Ridlon, who has been missing since Saturday night from 1014 River Road; he was last seen at 9 p.m., and anyone with information is urged to call (207-892-2525).  WGME

CULTURE NEWS

  • Portland will host the Back Cove Music and Arts Festival this weekend at Payson Park with headliners like Jack White, Lucy Dacus, and The Roots performing from 12:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday—organizers are offering free shuttles, bus routes, and water stations while managing road closures to support the event in the residential area.  Portland Press Herald
  • Animal rights group PETA filed a lawsuit against the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland, claiming the event tortures lobsters by boiling them alive. PETA seeks a ruling to declare the festival a public nuisance and ban steaming lobsters on public land while the 78th annual event will run from July 30 through August 3.  WMTW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Riley Sullivan of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston said that low birth rates and an aging population forced rural Maine hospitals to close maternity wards to cut losses, with seven labor and delivery units closing since his 2019 study. He explained that a high median age of 45.1 and losses of over $1 million a year pushed hospitals to make tough choices—raising worries about future access to care.  WMTW
  • As students prepare to return to school, optometrists urge parents to get early eye exams for children to catch vision problems that might affect learning and behavior (children as young as 4 should have exams and those with a family history of eye issues may need them sooner). Dr. Robert Melendez said new glasses can improve a child's classroom performance and warned that too much screen time may be linked to rising nearsightedness.  WMTW
  • Project Lifeline is a partnership between MaineHealth and the City that sends Portland Fire’s mobile outreach team and specialist Dr. O’Connor to care for unhoused pregnant and postpartum people dealing with addiction. Inspired by a near-tragic case in early February 2023 — when emergency responders helped a patient avoid giving birth outdoors in brutal weather — the program uses a mix of grants and billable services to operate and aims to reach patients who rarely receive care.  Portland Press Herald
