CULTURE NEWS

  • Singer Lucy Dacus will officiate a wedding ceremony during her performance at the Back Cove Music and Arts Festival in Payson Park on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.—she will marry fans in a shared service during her set, with the ceremony taking place near the song 'Best Guess.'  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Maine Audubon reported a record 174 breeding pairs of piping plovers this year—beating the previous record of 157 pairs, with Wells Beach having the most at 23. Volunteers have roped off nesting areas and worked with landowners to protect these endangered birds from human activity and predators.  WMTW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Coast Guard said a historic schooner’s mast had rotted from moisture and poor inspections, causing it to snap in October 2023 and kill one person. The agency will work with maritime groups—such as the U.S. Forest Service—to set new guidelines for checking wooden masts.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Secretary of State’s Office announced Thursday that November’s ballot will have two statewide referendum questions, one on voter ID changes that would limit absentee voting and drop box use and one on a red flag law that allows courts to temporarily restrict access to firearms. Voter ID supporters say the change could reduce fraud while critics & gun rights advocates worry it may limit access for some voters as campaigns now begin funding debates ahead of the election.  Portland Press Herald
