Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 4th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Domestic violence survivors in Maine now remain in shelters for six months to a year as a tight rental market limits bed availability—only 14% of eligible clients receive shelter placements while rising rents and voucher issues hinder moves to permanent housing.  Portland Press Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Portland police are searching for an unidentified man who robbed Bangor Savings Bank on Brighton Avenue Saturday morning — he fled into nearby woods with undisclosed cash and was seen wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, green pants, navy blue shoes, blue gloves, a mask and sunglasses.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • White sharks have always been in Maine waters — experts report that conservation laws and new tracking apps helped record 15 confirmed sightings in July, including one off Camden, which shows a healthy ocean. Researchers urge residents to report sightings to local harbor masters and remind beachgoers to stay out of the water when sharks are seen.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine conservation advocates are urging lawmakers to reject a nearly $400 million cut to the Land and Water Conservation Fund that supports over 46,000 projects nationwide and funds parks like Acadia and Crescent Beach. The proposed cut will risk Maine’s $4 billion outdoor recreation industry and its 30,000 jobs — threatening local economies and access to cherished natural spaces.  Portland Press Herald
  • Swollen bladderwort has spread to eight Maine lakes including Little Ossipee Lake after it was first seen three years ago, threatening native plants and water quality. Local officials and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection urge boaters to clean, drain, and dry their equipment (as shown in Waterboro's boat inspection program) to help prevent further spread.  WGME
  • Maine cities are promoting native plants on public property and in private gardens to support local wildlife and withstand our climate—experts note that species like the cardinal flower and red maple provide crucial food for insects. Maine Audubon and local nurseries are also working to educate residents on the benefits and proper care for these plants.  Portland Press Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maine health insurance rates could rise by as much as 32% next year as the state reviews proposed increases driven by steep prescription drug costs — and a market with little competition. The bureau will hold a public forum on August 15 and finalize rates in late August to help address these challenges.  Portland Press Herald
