COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Portland officials launched a pilot program to serve free meals at Cotton Street for the unhoused, and three local non-profits—Preble Street, Hope Squad Maine, and Milestone Recovery—will hand out meals from 12:30-2 p.m. daily until the trial ends on September 4 when the program will be reviewed.  WGME

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 15-year-old teen from Bangor died Saturday when his ATV rolled over on the Cross Road trail in Presque Isle—emergency crews tried to revive him but he did not survive.  Portland Press Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Maine Capitol Police Chief Matthew Clancy got into an altercation at The Quarry Tap Room in Hallowell late Friday night that spilled outside and led to charges of assault, refusing to submit to arrest, and disorderly conduct—he sustained a cut, posted $500 bail early Saturday, and is set to appear in court on Sept. 29.  WMTW
  • Marcel Lagrange, a South Portland man accused of fatally shooting Michael Hayter and Brittney Cockrell in a Westbrook parking lot in June 2023, will face a two-day competency hearing tomorrow while the couple’s children (11 and 6) witnessed the event.  WGME
  • Jonathan Geisinger's trial for felony murder and robbery in the fatal 2022 shooting on Woodford Street has been postponed after his lawyer filed a delay motion due to scheduling conflicts, which leaves the victim's family frustrated + he could remain in custody for over a year until a new trial date is set.  Portland Press Herald
  • In Hallowell late Friday night, Maine Capitol Police chief Matthew Clancy was arrested on charges of misdemeanor assault, refusing to submit to arrest, and disorderly conduct after he, under the influence of alcohol, caused a disturbance and assaulted a responding officer (Clancy posted $500 bail on Saturday).  Portland Press Herald

  • Royal River Community Players established the David Ray Scholarship Fund to honor the late actor who was posthumously recognized at Yarmouth’s town meeting in June—over 82 donors have contributed over $27,000 and the fund now offers more than 10 scholarships to support community theater participation.  Portland Press Herald

  • Kaleb Dyer caught a rare yellow lobster off Vinalhaven and shared photos with Maine’s Total Coverage — experts at the New England Aquarium say naturally yellow lobsters occur about 1 in 30 million — making this catch exceptionally rare.  WMTW
  • Tropical Storm Dexter formed late Sunday night in the Atlantic with winds near 45 mph and was 255 miles northwest of Bermuda Monday morning (its tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 115 miles). The storm will move east-northeast and strengthen slightly before turning post-tropical by Wednesday while staying well offshore of Maine.  WMTW
