  • On Tuesday, the Topsham Fair opened at the fairgrounds off Route 196—featuring games, rides, animal exhibits and local food vendors—and will run until August 10.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland Police Department is collecting backpacks filled with essential school supplies for local students. Donations will be accepted at the police department lobby (109 Middle Street) (until August 22).  WGME

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lego artist Colby Adolphsen of Waldoboro builds Maine landmarks in miniature and displays his work at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk until December—his exhibits include a mini Paul Bunyan statue and the Nubble Lighthouse. The museum will host a Lego event on Aug. 16 and Adolphsen will lead a free drop-in workshop on Aug. 13 at 3 p.m.—inviting locals to celebrate Maine creativity.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Public housing residents in Maine must now receive a 30-day notice before eviction and can request hardship exemptions or rent adjustments if they fall behind on rent. They can use a grievance process—through informal meetings, formal hearings, or mediation—to try to prevent eviction in court.  WGME
  • The city's main fire boat was taken out of service after striking an unknown object during a rescue call near Jewell Island about three weeks ago—its repairs are estimated to cost between $20,000 and $30,000 while backup Marine 2 remains in operation.  FOX23
