On Saturday, Aug. 15, the Scarborough Land Trust hosted the first Scarborough Marsh Day (a celebration of the salt marsh ecosystem) where locals enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, live music and clam-digging demonstrations.
🎭 Culture
About 30 local, regional, and graffiti artists are painting jungle-themed murals covering more than 20,000 sqft on building walls along Cove Street (84 and 91 Cove Street) this weekend.
They began Friday night and will continue through the weekend.
🎓 Education
Ruth’s Reusables, a nonprofit that provides classroom supplies, paused its free backpack program due to rising costs and fewer donations, leaving teachers to cover school supply expenses.
The group hopes to resume the program next school year (if funding stabilizes).
🌲 Environment
Maine Audubon highlights activity of local pollinators including monarch butterflies, bumble bees, hickory tussock moth caterpillars, cicadas and yellow garden spiders as warm weather fuels their movement; the organization also hosts free bird walks in Gilsland Farm Audubon Sanctuary (Falmouth) on Thursday mornings.
Local fishing guide Brandon Bichrest has removed 600 old tires from Maine rivers as he works to clean up pollution + his project began after he noticed decades-old waste along the riverbanks.

Marcos Gaspar-Da Silva, a Bridgton man who spent nearly seven months in immigration detention, was granted lawful permanent resident status and reunited with his wife (Alessia).
They will arrive at Portland International Jetport at about 9:30 p.m. today.

Dallas Mavericks star Cooper Flagg hosted the Flagg Brothers Basketball Procamp in Orono yesterday with his brothers + Ace and Hunter, reminding the community of his Maine roots while celebrating his NBA success in a familiar, low-key style.
Roman Anthony, a Red Sox outfielder, will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with the Portland Sea Dogs as he works back from a torn hand tendon.
He is set to appear in the season opener of a six-game series against the Reading Fightin Phils at Hadlock Field.
