COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leroy J. Bailey, a U.S. Army veteran wounded in Vietnam—he lost his face in a mortar blast and had many surgeries—was laid to rest yesterday at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Augusta after receiving military honors. Family and friends remembered him as a kind and brave man who served his country with courage.  Portland Press Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Police found the body of 53-year-old Levern Kelley at her Waldoboro home on Gethner Road on August 10 after a 911 call and later charged 49-year-old James Clark of Damariscotta, who has a long criminal history and fled to Florida where he was arrested; he will be extradited to Maine.  FOX23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Jeff from Augusta saw his Consolidated Communications bill jump from $354 in June to $749 in July—rising maintenance costs for copper lines are making old technology more expensive. With less state oversight in multi-provider areas, he is switching to a new provider to lower his costs.  FOX23

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The company Crisis24 said its emergency alert software worked correctly during last Friday’s Windham shooting alert error—despite Maine officials blaming a system malfunction for sending alerts statewide. State officials explained that the alert reached phones outside the Windham and Raymond area and violated the state’s guidelines for targeted emergency notifications.  FOX23
  • Maine is suing the federal government in Rhode Island over illegal conditions on more than $1 billion in VOCA funds that help crime victims. The lawsuit says states must assist immigration enforcement to get the grants—Maine lawmakers passed LD 1971 to limit police cooperation with ICE.  WMTW
  • Governor Janet Mills announced a surplus of $152.2 million that will be divided among key funds—MaineCare Stabilization Fund, CDC Program, Loan Insurance Reserve, Retiree Health Insurance, Reserve for Operating Capital, Budget Stabilization Fund and Highway and Bridge Capital—to meet constitutional requirements, while advocates like Maine Primary Care Association’s CEO Darcy Shargo noted that funding to ease pharmacy deserts was cut and said a new bill will be proposed next session.  WMTW

  • The invasive Asian longhorned tick was found for the first time in Cumberland County through UMaine's passive tick surveillance program—officials are now increasing monitoring to protect livestock, pets, and public health.  FOX23

  • Portland Sea Dogs manager Chad Epperson is one win away from tying the franchise record and will pass it if his team wins three of the 24 homestand games that began Tuesday at Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field—he has built his strategy by focusing on developing young players while keeping his eye on victory.  Portland Press Herald
