- ➤ Hundreds of people will gather in Portland Sunday for the 12th annual Rally 4 Recovery—a free community concert and resource fair celebrating hope, healing and recovery during National Recovery Month, with Nicole Proctor, executive director of Portland Recovery Community Center, providing details. - ➤ This fall, many Maine theaters and concert halls will host plays and music shows, including a stage version of Stephen King’s Misery at Public Theatre (Oct 24-Nov 9) and a one-woman show about Eleanor Roosevelt from Sept 24 to Oct 19. Portland chef Jordan Rubin from Mr. Tuna was named by Food & Wine as one of the nation's best new chefs after growing his business from a hot dog cart to a permanent sushi bar on Middle and Franklin. - ➤ Maine has nearly 90% forest coverage, with an estimated 17.5 million acres making it the top state for wooded land. Most of this forest is privately owned—about 92% while government and federal lands cover the rest, and tree volume has grown over recent years. Portland Press Herald
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ City councilors approved a 180-day moratorium that will begin Wednesday on the new Live Nation concert venue in Portland after local artists warned that the 3,000-seat project may hurt smaller venues — a decision that pauses development while community members continue to voice concerns. WGME
- ➤ Maine’s highest court is reviewing a long dispute over beach access at Popham Beach Estates—where the Hills and Tappens have clashed since 2022 over whether the beach is private or common. Judges will decide the case under a broader lawsuit that seeks to change Maine’s beach law, with no set deadline for a ruling. Portland Press Herald
- ➤ Westbrook Mayor David Morse will be unopposed on Nov. 4 after a mayoral challenger and a School Committee candidate were removed for not having enough valid signatures; the mayoral challenger—Larry McWilliams—is appealing his rejection while a School Committee candidate said they were not given a write-in option. - ➤ The Maine CDC revoked the Church of Safe Injection's license to run its syringe service program after its building on Main Street in Lewiston was condemned last month for biohazard risks—unsecured needles, human waste, and signs of unauthorized occupancy. The organization has 30 days to appeal and must cease all operations. WMTW
- ➤ During National Cholesterol Education Month, Dr. Craig Brett, a cardiologist at Northern Light Mercy Hospital, explained that LDL helps carry needed cholesterol to cells and only causes problems when in excess while HDL removes cholesterol from blood vessels. He said children aged 9 to 11 should get a lipid profile test followed by checks every 4-6 years to detect issues early—this simple test can help prevent heart problems. WMTW
