COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, September 20, a Touch A Truck event in Gray raised funds for the Gray Food Pantry and gave local kids and young adults a chance to learn about transit careers. Brian Parke of Go Your Way Maine said the tractor-trailer simulator—used to show how trucking jobs may grow amid a driver shortage—sparked interest in pursuing these careers.  WMTW

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Maine businesses are adjusting to rising summer heat that has pushed energy bills up and changed work practices in construction, farming, and fishing—crews use ice pops and dairies install barn fans to cool workers and livestock. Leaders say the longer, unpredictable season will force new investments in irrigation and cooling measures to protect production.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Coast Guard is asking for public input on its plan to update buoy placements in Maine waters as part of its effort to modernize navigational aids—feedback will be accepted until Nov. 15. Earlier suggestions already led to changes in the proposal, with some buoys remaining while others are set for removal.  Portland Press Herald
  • Governor Mills spoke at the Common Ground Fair and said the severe drought is hurting state farmers — she advised them to report any losses to the Farm Service Agency for help.  WGME

HEALTH NEWS

  • A patient at Pen Bay Medical Center’s PARC Unit said he was kept in a windowless room with only a bed and TV, felt like he was in jail, and was held for hours despite asking for help voluntarily—parents of mentally ill children also reported that treatment and services in Maine are very limited.  Portland Press Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Emily Hussey tied the game with 32 seconds remaining and Corinne Ramunno scored 22 seconds into overtime to give the Tigers a 3—2 win over Falmouth in a Class A South field hockey game Saturday in Biddeford; Mia Mariello assisted all three goals as the win improved the team's record to 3—0—2.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland defeated Deering 34 to 0 on Friday when quarterback Cordell Jones broke two program records and accepted the game ball from his coach+ marking a significant milestone for the team.  Portland Press Herald
  • UNE football improved to 3-0 on Saturday as Chris Lang threw two touchdown passes and Damien Jones rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown in a 35-8 win over VTSU Castleton. Other regional college teams also played—Middlebury beat Bowdoin 31-10, Trinity defeated Bates 30-13, Williams beat Colby 38-0, WPI edged Husson 15-13, and Norwich shut out Maine Maritime 63-0.  Portland Press Herald
