CULTURE NEWS

  • Portland commemorated the 250th anniversary of the Burning of Falmouth event Saturday when the Tate House Museum held 'Flames to Freedom' in Casco Bay — guests boarded the Tall Ship Lynx to watch a reenactment of the British attack — marking a historic moment.  FOX23
  • This week, arts events begin with Kandis Chappell’s one-woman play 'Eleanor' at Portland Stage running through Oct. 19 and Kevin James performing his Owls Don’t Walk tour Friday at Merrill Auditorium at 7 p.m. in Portland — Maine Roller Derby competes Saturday at Happy Wheels Skate Center in Westbrook at 5 p.m., The Kingston Trio performs Saturday at The Hill Arts at 7 p.m. while the Buena Vista Orchestra plays at Aura at 9 p.m., and a Standardbreds fundraiser runs Sunday at Funky Bow Brewery in Lyman from noon to 6 p.m.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An earthquake struck southeastern Maine on Sunday night — its epicenter in North Waterboro — and the 1.9 quake, occurring about 6.5 miles underground, caused residents in Hollis, North Shapleigh and East Baldwin to feel strong shaking and hear a loud boom.  WMTW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Central Maine Power has asked Maine’s Public Utilities Commission to review a plan that would raise average household bills by about $35 a month starting in October 2026—hundreds of Mainers have submitted comments and state officials, including Gov Mills, have urged a careful review to ensure the increases remain fair.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland Public Works will begin reconstructing the Congress Square intersection next week. The project will mill and overlay the intersection, improve sidewalks, traffic signals, and lighting, and add accessibility upgrades—causing temporary traffic delays on Congress and High Streets.  WGME

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 300 people gathered at Deering Oaks park on Sunday to raise funds for ALS research and care, with teams collecting $70,000 before starting the one-mile walk—participants wore key-shaped lanyards in colors that signified their personal ties to the disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.  Portland Press Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Portland Hearts of Pine won 1-0 against FC Naples on Sunday as Ollie Wright scored a penalty kick at Fitzpatrick Stadium. The win cut Naples’ playoff advantage to four points while Portland moved six points clear of the cutoff with seven games remaining—fueling their push for a home postseason match.  Portland Press Herald
  • In Class A volleyball, Edward Little remained undefeated in its first six matches while South Portland reached four wins and one loss with teams set for tight upcoming contests—coach Corey Huot noted rising parity among competitors. In golf, Messalonskee notched seven straight wins and Winthrop’s freshman Drew Mertzel impressed with low scoring rounds, and nine days ago top finishers set personal records at the Southern Maine Classic cross country race.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Class of 2025 was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday at Husson University in Bangor, where 10 former athletes and coaches were honored for their contributions to Maine sports—Kelly Flagg, a former basketball star and coach, expressed her deep pride with her family supporting her at the ceremony.  WMTW
