COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pollinator Palooza, a celebration of Maine's pollinators, is set to take place today to raise awareness for their key role in the ecosystem—community engagement director Bethany Drouin and executive director Dave Greenham lead the event.  WGME

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A celebration of life for Scarborough High School's assistant principal Jacob Brown, who died in a car crash while fleeing police with alcohol and speed factors involved, starts at 10 a.m. today at Wentworth School in Scarborough—his family asking for donations to the Jacob Brown Memorial Fund instead of flowers—as the community gathers to remember his leadership.  FOX23

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A good soaking on Thursday gave drought areas 1 to 2 inches of rain along the coast and 2 to 3.5 inches inland—forecasters say the next eight days will be dry and more rain is needed to help ease the drought.  WMTW
  • NASA's new NISAR satellite released its first radar images that show Maine's Mount Desert Island with green forests and magenta areas—such as in Bar Harbor—along with North Dakota farmland. The $1.3 billion U.S.-Indian mission will begin science operations in November and help track floods, landslides, and other disasters.  WGME
  • Maine Audubon's outreach manager Nick Lund said that porch lights can disrupt bird migration by confusing hundreds of thousands of birds as they fly at night to their wintering grounds—he warned that these bright lights interfere with their natural navigation.  WGME

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal shutdown plans may affect over 11,000 Maine federal workers as agencies prepare for terminations and lawmakers debate a stopgap funding bill to keep services running—essential workers and safety programs like WIC could face cuts if an agreement is not reached. Lawmakers have been unable to secure bipartisan support while both Sen Collins and Sen King remain tight-lipped about the impasse.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine lawmakers faced 75 reported threats in 2025, up from 53 in 2024 and 23 in 2023, according to Maine Capitol Police (data showed peaks during legislative sessions).  FOX23

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anthem and Northern Light Health are in formal mediation over how much Anthem will pay for health care providers. Anthem claims that Northern Light left talks by making extra demands, while Northern Light says it has stayed engaged—warning that 30,000 patients may face higher costs if no deal is reached.  Portland Press Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today at 3:30 p.m. at Alfond Stadium in Orono, the Maine Black Bears host North Carolina A&T in their first conference meeting. The Black Bears, who are 0-4, will try to boost their offense—while the Aggies, 1-3 and having allowed 21 touchdowns in four games, look to challenge them.  Portland Press Herald
  • Bonny Eagle beat Noble 18 to 0 Friday as quarterback Colin Moran ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns—lifting the Scots to a 4-0 record. Their defense held Noble to 68 yards on 22 carries—showing strong play throughout the game.  Portland Press Herald
