COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Travis Mills Foundation is hosting two fundraisers this weekend in Portland to support veterans and their families—one with a plane pull and another with a bass fishing tournament set for Saturday. Led by retired staff sergeant Travis Mills, a quadruple amputee, the foundation raises funds for a camp that offers a peaceful space for post-9/11 veterans.  FOX23

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Mainers are using coupons, store-brand items and thrift shopping to cope with rising prices for groceries, clothes and rides—efforts that help them adjust as inflation pushes up costs. Shoppers are planning meals ahead and cutting back on extras to manage their budgets amid these challenges.  Portland Press Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Drought Monitor released on Oct. 9 shows Maine now has drought statewide with parts in moderate drought and nearly a third facing extreme conditions while 70% is under severe drought — the second worst intensity since 2002; forecasters say storms that drop 1.5 to 2 inches of rain will be needed for relief.  WGAN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portland will open an overnight emergency winter warming shelter by Nov. 15 after the city council accepted a $400,303 grant from MaineHousing. The shelter at 166 Riverside Industrial Parkway—located in the same building as the asylum seeker shelter—will hold up to 60 people and run from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on nights when temperatures hit 15 degrees or when snowfall reaches 10 inches.  WMTW
  • Maine’s new ticket resale law took effect two weeks ago to protect consumers by showing full pricing upfront and guaranteeing refunds for counterfeit or undelivered tickets. Senate President Mattie Daughtry said the law has already received eight complaints—StubHub, DraftKings, and others are now under review, with violators facing fines up to $10,000.  FOX23
  • Portland’s Sustainability and Transportation Committee advanced a plan to raise fines from $40 to $175 to help clear streets faster during snow parking bans — the proposal will be voted on by the full city council later this fall and includes adding five off-street parking areas for residents.  FOX23
  • Portland transportation officials are considering moving the Amtrak Downeaster station from its current spot on Thompson's Point Road to a new site next to the CSX mainline; a recent meeting showed the city favoring Union Station Plaza while NNEPRA backed a location near Mercy Hospital—no vote was taken and final plans will aim to improve travel efficiency and cut operating costs.  WMTW

HEALTH NEWS

  • With a shortage of dentists, Maine pediatricians are using silver diamine fluoride to stop cavities from getting worse as many children miss yearly dental visits. Dr. Brian Youth and Dr. Laura Blaisdell have treated over 70 patients and trained others—efforts that expand early access to oral care.  Portland Press Herald
