COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The beloved Portland Lantern Walk will take place on Sunday, October 19 at Deering Oaks Park—a free event celebrating art, light and community. Organizers say the event will bring residents together to enjoy lantern displays and creative energy.  FOX23

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fall Festival will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wolfe's Neck Center in Freeport—families will enjoy live music, food trucks and face painting while exploring farm animals and a pumpkin patch ride.  WGME
  • Spooktacular at Merrill Auditorium in Portland will host a family Halloween event—featuring an organ concert and other attractions—on Saturday. The event is designed for all ages to enjoy a festive evening.  WGME

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Oxford Hills School District will hold an info session on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Oxford Hills Middle School in South Paris to review plans for a new $88 million middle school funded by the state—voters will decide on the project on November 4 while a $76,000 cost covers legal fees and permits.  WGME
  • Julia Edwards, a choral music teacher at Poland Regional High School, was named 2026 Maine Teacher of the Year yesterday. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, she has been teaching in Maine since 2012 and will use her honor to speak about the value of education.  WGME

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows that 34% of Maine now faces extreme drought and 73% is in severe drought, with areas from Rangeley through Downeast and Portland affected. Rain chances will rise early next week—possibly bringing more than 2 inches in some places—and offer needed relief.  WMTW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mainers affected by gun violence will vote on a red flag law on Nov. 4 — a measure that would let families and police remove guns from someone if they see signs of a crisis. South Portland’s James LaPlante, who lost his brother to suicide in 2020, said the law would give families a quicker way to act while some opponents argue it may weaken due process.  Portland Press Herald

  • Many seniors on Medicare Advantage got letters warning that benefits and doctor choices might be reduced (some plans are leaving local markets). Hometown Senior Solutions advises scheduling appointments soon to review options (new changes start in 2026).  Portland Press Herald
