Good morning, Portland. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 25th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, youth hunters under 16 began Maine's annual two-day deer hunt at 5:55 a.m. as experienced mentors taught safety and skill while tagging stations in several communities processed the harvest.  Portland Press Herald
  • Preble Street opened a new 30,000-square-foot food security hub in South Portland that served dinner for 2,000 people. The center can produce up to 10,000 meals a day and officials warn that SNAP cuts in November will affect 170,000 Mainers—food pantries are already facing longer lines as they prepare for the changes.  Portland Press Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Two years after the Lewiston mass shootings on Oct. 25, 2023, survivors John and Danielle Jasper recalled the night at Schemengees Bar and Grille when John was shot in the leg while playing cornhole—when 18 people were killed and 13 injured—and now the couple continues to rebuild their lives by returning to the game.  WMTW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Maine theater veteran Wendy Poole, who served over 30 years in the state’s theater scene and led The Theater Project in Brunswick, is now an executive producer for Last Days—an indie film by Justin Lin that opened nationwide this week at Apple Cinemas in Westbrook and tells the story of a missionary killed in 2018. She said her goal is to reinvest any returns into more passion projects.  Portland Press Herald

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Portland worker who struggled on $15-$18 an hour while balancing full-time work and school said rising rents forced him to leave the city (he moved to Biddeford) after years of barely affording survival on expired free food. He urged voters to support raising the minimum wage on Question A to help sustain the local food and hospitality industry.  Portland Press Herald
