COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Donations to the American Red Cross help more than 200 Maine families who face a nearly 20% increase in home fires during the holiday season. Volunteers provide emergency care, install free smoke alarms, and offer shelter — services that give neighbors vital support after a crisis.  Portland Press Herald

  • In Maine, rising meat prices are driving residents to turn to deer hunting as a way to secure affordable food for winter. Bob Ouellette hunted a 123-pound deer on Saturday in Winthrop—experts say this trend helps families manage food budgets—, a method that is growing as food costs soar.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP benefits did not go out Saturday due to the government shutdown, and more than 170,000 Maine residents now rely on food banks—30% of whom are children facing increased hunger. Local groups in Biddeford and Portland have raised donations and food to help families while federal funding is delayed.  WMTW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ryan Martin, a Saco gym teacher and former Maranacook standout, will attempt his third Guinness World Record on November 10 at Saco Middle School by trying to make more than 1,372 high school three-pointers in one hour. He aims to inspire his students and welcome the public while a food truck serves spectators.  WMTW
  • On Saturday, Maine defeated Boston University 8-5 at Alfond Arena (scoring a season-high eight goals) and completed a weekend sweep (with Charlie Russell and Max Scott each netting two goals). Coach Ben Barr said the win showed progress as the team managed a high-scoring contest.  Portland Press Herald
  • On Saturday in Augusta, Portland’s freshman Nora Schmidt won the Class A race in 18:50.60—nearly 23 seconds ahead of the runner-up—and led the Bulldogs to a team championship with 77 points. Greely’s Rowan Barry won the Class B race in 19:10.90 while Madison’s Bryanna Hagopian clinched the Class C crown in a 19:36.05 finish.  Portland Press Herald
  • MDI volleyball beat Gardiner in four sets — 25-14, 25-12, 24-26, 28-26 — to earn its first Class C state title on Saturday at Hampden Academy.  Portland Press Herald
  • Scarborough boys soccer beat South Portland 1-0 with a goal by Ibrahim Jibril in the 63rd minute to win their Class A South semifinal. The unbeaten team will play Falmouth or Gorham at Falmouth High School Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.—they remain top-ranked with a 16-0 record.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Washington Academy volleyball team won its second straight Class B title by defeating undefeated York 3-2 in five sets and avenged its only regular season loss—Aubrey Faulkingham scored the clinching point in the final set after a narrow fourth-set lapse.  Portland Press Herald
  • On Saturday, second-seeded Biddeford secured a spot in the Class A South field hockey regional final by defeating Sanford 2 to 1—Corinne Ramunno scored both goals to help her team advance. Top-ranked Cheverus beat Gorham 6 to 1 and will meet Biddeford on Wednesday at Yarmouth High School for a rematch in the state final.  Portland Press Herald
  • Portland Hearts of Pine beat Chattanooga 1-0 in a USL League One quarterfinal on Saturday night in Chattanooga—Ollie Wright scored the only goal and Hunter Morse made key saves to secure the win. The team will face the winner of Sunday's match between Spokane and South Georgia in the semifinals.  Portland Press Herald
  • Marshwood’s Henri Rivard won the Class A boys race at the cross country state championship at Cony High School in Augusta on Saturday by finishing in 16:30.92 and becoming the first individual champion in Marshwood history. Freeport’s Alex Gilbert won the Class B race by a 17-second margin and Dirigo’s William Morris secured the Class C title by finishing more than a minute ahead of his closest competitor.  Portland Press Herald
  • Gorham volleyball won its third straight Class A title on Saturday at the University of Southern Maine by defeating Thornton Academy by a score of 3 to 1 — the team won the first two sets 25 to 20 and 25 to 23, lost the third set 25 to 21, then clinched with a 25 to 18 win in the final set.  Portland Press Herald
