COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Maine Community Foundation will donate $250,000 to feed Mainers — the funds will help Good Shepherd Food Bank provide one month of food — as locals join together to keep food on the table.  FOX23

CULTURE NEWS

  • Maine’s upcoming craft fairs will offer local handmade gifts and unique art during the holiday season. The guide lists events from Portland to Lewiston-Auburn with dates, hours and locations—helping visitors plan their trips—.  Portland Press Herald
  • Maine breweries detailed the unusual origins of their craft beer names during 207 Beer Week, including Maine Beer Co’s popular IPA named Lunch, inspired by a whale skeleton (donated and hung at the tasting room). Other brewers shared that a mushroom trip led to Substance Ale and a meme sparked the creation of Pantless Thunder Goose, showing a playful side of local naming traditions.  Portland Press Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state’s AI Task Force released its final report on Friday with 33 recommendations to help Mainers learn about and safely use AI in areas like the economy, health, and education. Gov. Mills said the report sets a clear path for future legislation and innovation (the panel began meeting in January).  Portland Press Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Light Health and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield have not reached a new contract after missing the November 1 deadline—hospital leaders assured Anthem customers that care will remain in-network during ongoing negotiations. Without the contract, 30,000 Anthem patients may face out-of-network charges for Northern Light physicians and non-hospital services.  WMTW
  • MaineHealth said a computer error on October 20 sent 531 mistaken death notices and has sent apology letters to the affected patients—no patient was ever recorded as deceased. The health system confirmed the issue has been fully resolved.  WMTW
  • Rising parvovirus cases among unvaccinated pets in Maine have led experts to urge owners to vaccinate promptly—treatment can cost thousands and misinformation delays care. Veterinarians and humane groups warn that low vaccination rates could put more pets at risk and stress the need for better education on pet health.  Portland Press Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • A national study and survey found that girls soccer players are concussed at 6.08 per 10,000 exposures—nearly three times the rate of boys, and coaches say the game’s physical nature and differences in strength put players at risk. Trainers and local experts note that proper technique and equipment like Q collars may help reduce concussions, though no clear solution is available.  Portland Press Herald
  • The Maine Mariners beat the Reading Royals 5-1 on Sunday at Cross Insurance Arena—giving the Royals their first regulation loss this season. Five players scored for Maine as Jacob Perreault added a goal and two assists and goalie Luke Cavallin saved 25 shots to extend the team's five-game point streak.  Portland Press Herald
